There’s always something going on in the back streets and laneways of Melbourne. A friend who had moved to Sydney a few years ago had come down for the weekend and commented “ I love coming back to Melbourne, it’ like putting on a pair of old comfortable slippers”.
We were on our way to Secret Wars to see the final of two Melbourne street artists: Scale and Ken Taylor battling it off for the title at 1000 pound bend, Lt Lonsdale Street. It’s not often you get to see two street artists paint and draw competitively for 90 minutes with no sketches.
An impressive turnout of Melbourne’s creatives keen on witnessing art in motion stood there transfixed as the each image emerged from the white drawing walls until the final countdown, a crowd vote via a decibel reader and a final decision by 2 independent judges announced Scale the winner.
Also included in the night was an MC, DJ scratcher, band, and a well stocked bar.
There is a history to Secret Wars which started in back in 2006 in London, UK an idea that has been infectious, spreading to Europe and the USA. It’s one of the only events of it’s kind and the first live art battle to have taken the world by storm.
Looking forward to the next one! http://www.secretwars.com.au
